Parent Engagement Session: Supporting Children and Youth with Autism

Part 1 – Executive Functioning Skills:

Many children and youth with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) struggle with executive functioning; the complex mental skills that help accomplish tasks, goals, and control behaviors. Supporting the development of executive functioning skills leads to many positive outcomes, including, but not limited to, improved emotional well-being, academic achievement, and generally more life satisfaction. 

In Part 1, participants will:

  • Develop a better understanding of executive functioning and how it relates to the home and community environment
  • Learn strategies to support children and youth with executive functioning skills in the home environment

Part 2 – Functional Skills:

Developing functional skills helps children and youth become more independent and eventually promotes success in adulthood with skills in areas such as self-care, safety, home-living skills, and communication.  

In Part 2, participants will:

  • Develop a better understanding of the wide array of functional skills
  • Learn strategies to support teaching these skills in the home environment

This workshop will also provide participants with a handout of the content and any resources that are discussed.
